A leaking or blocked water heater drain valve
Quick answer
Water at the drain valve may come from the valve, its connection or a tank leak above it. A replacement valve needs the correct thread, pressure and temperature ratings. Do not remove a valve from a hot, pressurized tank.
Find the source before buying a valve
A wet floor does not establish which part has failed. Water can run down the tank from a supply connection or collect near the drain from another leak. A technician traces the source before deciding whether a valve replacement will solve it.
If the valve will not drain
Sediment can obstruct the opening. Do not unscrew the drain valve, remove the relief valve or cut piping to make a hot tank empty faster. Stop and arrange a controlled drain and repair.
Before a planned drain, the heater's heat or power is shut down according to its manual and the water is allowed to cool. The tank is completely refilled before heat is restored. A leak or damaged tank needs professional assessment first.
Choosing a replacement
A hose fitting or an improvised valve assembled from spare parts may not be suitable for a water heater. Use the manufacturer's approved specification and include a leak check after installation. A repair quote should identify the valve and any other failed connection.
