Our honest take on heat pump water heaters

Heat pump water heaters get a lot of attention for efficiency. But after installing thousands of systems, we see the problems: recovery is extremely slow, only 6 to 25 gallons an hour against 220 for a tankless.

They also need dedicated 240 volt, 30 amp electrical work, they're noisy, and their air filters clog often. In our experience they're only worth it for homeowners with solar panels.

Rebates have mostly closed

The federal 25C credit ended with 2025 installs, and HEEHRA single family rebates have been fully reserved since February 2026. Check current programs before counting on one.

Going tankless? A water softener isn't optional here.

San Diego's hard water will destroy a tankless heat exchanger in 4 to 6 years without a softener. Calcium and magnesium build up inside the unit and cause early failure. We've seen it hundreds of times.

What we install, and what we won't

  • Top pick, tank

    Bradford White

Our go to for every tank install. American made with superior build quality, and our supplier Ferguson stocks every part for same day availability.

  • Top pick, tankless

    Navien

Our pick after 2,500+ tankless installs: stainless steel heat exchangers, easy to service, and built in recirculation on the A models for instant hot water.

  • What we won't install

Big box store heaters. The equipment is consumer grade and the warranty process is a nightmare, with homeowners spending 8+ hours on hold.

How an installation works

  1. 1

    Free on site estimate

We look at your setup and hot water needs and give you a transparent breakdown of equipment, materials and labor.

  2. 2

    System selection and sizing

We size the system to your household. If you're going tankless, we talk about the softener upfront, so there are no surprises later.

  3. 3

    Professional installation

New heater, expansion tank, venting, gas or electrical, seismic straps and all plumbing, to code. Permit by you, or by us for an extra fee.

  4. 4

    Testing and walkthrough

We test the system, set it to 120°F, and show you the shutoff valve, T&P checks and when to book maintenance.

The Ridiculous Warranty

Covers labor and parts, with no questions asked. If we can't repair your water heater, we install a new upgraded model for free.

Installation questions

  • What size water heater do I need?

For tanks: 40 gallons for 1 or 2 people, 50 gallons for 2 or 3, and 75 gallons for 4 or more. For tankless, sizing depends on flow rate and temperature rise, and San Diego's warm incoming water is an advantage. We size it properly at your free estimate.

  • Can I convert from tank to tankless?

Yes, but it's more involved than a swap. A conversion needs a gas line upgrade, new venting and electrical work. We handle all of it and make sure everything is up to code.

  • Do I need a water softener with my new heater?

For tankless, yes: it's mandatory in San Diego, because our hard water destroys tankless heat exchangers in 4 to 6 years without one. For a tank, a softener is recommended but not critical.

  • Are heat pump water heaters worth it in San Diego?

Only if you have solar panels. They recover slowly (6 to 25 gallons an hour), need dedicated 240 volt electrical, are noisy, and their filters clog often. A tank or tankless is the better choice for most homes.

  • Is a permit required?

Yes, every installation needs a permit, and California requires an expansion tank. You can pull your own permit, or we handle it for an additional fee.

  • How long does installation take?

A standard tank install takes 2 to 4 hours. Tankless installs and tank to tankless conversions take 4 to 8 hours. Same day installation is available across San Diego County.
