Solar thermal water heater leaks and repairs

Solar collectors, circulation controls and backup heaters form one system. A solar thermal specialist should assess the cause.

Quick answer

Solar thermal water heating is different from rooftop electricity generation. A fault may involve collectors, pumps, controls, a storage tank or backup heat. Confirm the system type and contact a qualified solar thermal service provider.

Record what is failing

Note whether there is no hot water, less hot water than usual, a visible leak or a controller warning. Identify the collector and storage system from their labels and describe when the problem started. A problem in the backup heater can look like a solar problem.

The collector loop may contain a separate heat transfer fluid rather than household drinking water. Do not open a pressurized loop, drain unfamiliar fluid or put domestic plumbing repair products into it.

Collector and panel leaks

Keep off the roof and do not handle hot collector piping. Collector repairs, freeze damage and fluid replacement need the correct system procedure and compatible materials. A generic water heater repair kit cannot establish compatibility.

A storage tank leak still needs its source traced. A connection, a safety discharge and a failed tank require different responses. Do not plug a discharge pipe or keep a leaking system operating.

Maintenance and service coverage

Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule for the collector circuit, controls and backup heater. Solar thermal coverage is not implied by QWH's household heater services; confirm the appropriate specialist before booking.
