Boiler, baseboard and hydronic heating problems

A boiler or water source heat pump serving room heating needs different expertise from an ordinary domestic hot water tank.

Quick answer

Hot water baseboards, heating coils and boilers are parts of a space heating system. A home can have both a boiler and a separate domestic water heater. Identify which system has failed and contact a qualified hydronic or HVAC specialist.

Domestic hot water or room heating?

Cold taps and cold radiators are different symptoms. Some buildings combine both services through a boiler or indirect storage tank, while others use separate appliances. Identify the model and describe whether taps, baseboards or both have lost heat.

A heating coil may be inside another appliance and can involve separate water circuits. Do not assume a household water heater element kit is suitable for a boiler coil or furnace related hot water problem.

What the technician needs

  • The appliance model, displayed fault and which zones or fixtures are affected.
  • Any recent control changes, pressure changes or work on the heating system.
  • Visible leaks, unusual sounds and whether the problem changes with heating demand.

Keep repairs within the right trade

Do not open hot pressurized heating circuits, bypass low water or pressure controls, or repeatedly reset a boiler that locks out. Gas odors and carbon monoxide alarms require leaving the area and calling for emergency help.

QWH's published domestic water heater services do not confirm boiler, furnace, baseboard or water source heat pump coverage. Check with a hydronic or HVAC specialist for those systems.
