Tankless

Tankless heat exchanger repair or replacement

Scale, a leak and a combustion fault are different problems. Understand what an exchanger diagnosis needs to establish.

Quick answer

A heat exchanger transfers heat to the water. Mineral scale can reduce performance, while a cracked or leaking exchanger may need replacement. A qualified technician should confirm the fault and check manufacturer coverage before a major repair.

Symptoms do not identify the failed part

Lukewarm water, new noises and shutdowns can result from more than one component. A technician checks the fault code, flow, water quality, combustion and leak source before deciding the exchanger is responsible.

If water is leaking inside the unit, stop using it and arrange service. Water may damage electrical components. Do not remove the cover or keep operating a leaking heater to see whether the fault clears.

Cleaning is different from repairing a leak

Descaling removes mineral deposits using the method specified by the manufacturer. It does not repair a crack or make a leaking exchanger sound. Some failures require an approved replacement assembly rather than an improvised repair.

Ask the technician to check the serial number for warranty coverage, the availability of the correct part and the condition of the rest of the heater. Compare the complete repair price with replacement, including any additional work needed.

Keep the replacement working

Plan for annual maintenance following the manufacturer's manual. A water softener or scale prevention system can reduce mineral buildup and the need for descaling, but it does not replace checks of the venting, air filter, condensate system and safety controls. Descaling frequency depends on water quality, usage and the model.
