What is a power vent water heater?
Quick answer
Power vent heaters cost roughly $1,300 to $1,600 before installation, two to three times a standard atmospheric heater. They're more efficient, but usually need more maintenance later in life.
A fan on top forces exhaust up the vent and draws in a second stream of air to cool it, so the vent can be PVC and run in any direction. They came in during the early 2000s to solve vertical venting problems, and are common in multi level condos built since.
Unlike a standard heater they have an onboard computer and an exhaust fan, which is what makes them less reliable over time.
