This is what commonly happens
More about your pilot light and thermal couple.
Your thermal couple is responsible for creating a small volt of electricity called millivolts. The thermal couple sends this electricity to the gas control unit. When there is electricity present the gas control valve will open and allow the main burner to ignite and heat your water. The thermal couple serves two purposes: One is to allow the pilot light to stay lit and the second is to let the gas control valve know that there is a flame present and that the main burner can safely be activated.
If your pilot light will not stay lit or it continues to go out every few hours, then your thermal couple has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
